Somewhere something’s calling me - away from Substack

Hello there.

This is not a usual Substack post from me; in fact it’s most unusual. I’m writing to thank you, and to let you know that I’ll be taking quite a break from writing here. The reason is a good one: I’m writing a book, and it’s on the very subject of this series. It will be published in the UK and USA by Bloomsbury; it’s due to come out in 2026.

For the book, I’ll be developing quite a few of the pieces I’ve written here, so some of it will be familiar to you. But there’ll be a lot more in it: these Substack pieces come to about 50,000 words so far; the book will run to about 80,000. I’ve learned a fair bit since starting this nearly two years ago, and hopefully my thinking and writing have come on some way, too. And I’m currently trying to arrange interviews with significant figures, so there should be more voices, stories, insights and colour to look forward to.

But the book is only happening because of you. When I started writing here, it was in hope: I thought there might be an audience for this subject, but I was far from certain. I drew encouragement from every single view, every like, every comment, every share and, most significantly, every subscription. The fact you signed up to receive my pieces was an act of belief and trust on your part. I hope you feel it has been worth it; I’ve certainly enjoyed writing for you.

I may write the occasional piece here in future, but, as I am sure you will understand, the book now takes priority. And it seems quite an apt place to leave things here for now, too: it’s close to the end, but some extraordinary works remain unexamined. You can expect to read a lot about them in the book.

As I say, this should not be the last you hear from me, but it will be the last you hear from me for a while. I really hope you like the book.
